Widespread Water Contamination

The quality of the drinking water in this country has been a health concern for many years. We’ve all heard of the problems in Flint, Michigan, but there are issues with drinking water contamination across the country.

What is Contaminating the Water?

There are a number of different contaminants that have been found in the drinking water of  many cities. Much of the water contamination is the result of manufacturing processes taking place near the water source. Lead seems to be one of the most common contaminants. Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been found in the drinking water near many military bases and airports. PFAS can be found in fire-extinguishing foam, stain-free textiles, and anti-stick pans. Other fluorocarbon chemicals have also been discovered. Some other contaminants found in drinking water include:

  • Petroleum-based compounds
  • Benzene
  • Mercury and other metals
  • Trichloroethylene
  • Phenols
  • Volatile organic compounds
  • Bacteria
  • Protozoa and other pathogens

Where is the Contamination Found?

Contaminated drinking water can be found in cities all over the country. Hundreds of military bases have been found to have contaminated water. In addition, areas near airports have found increased incidences of contaminated drinking water. Those communities who have drinking water sources near manufacturing facilities or oil refineries have also found water contamination.

Who is Liable for Contaminated Drinking Water?

Consuming contaminated water can lead to the development of cancer and other illnesses. Who is responsible for these injuries caused by water contamination? When contamination of the drinking water is known with scientific certainty, and the party responsible for the contamination can be identified, they may be held liable for damages in a state or federal lawsuit. One of the most difficult elements to prove in a water contamination case is the causation. There must be a link between your illness and the contaminated water.
