retailers continue to sell recalled products

Sometimes a product is placed on the market that is dangerous or defective. It may have been designed in an unsafe manner, marketed improperly, or manufactured incorrectly. When this is the case, it is the responsibility of the product’s manufacturer and the government to protect consumers by removing the product from the market.

What is a Product Recall?

A product recall is a request from a manufacturer or the government to return a product after safety issues or dangers to consumers are discovered. Recalls involve large quantities of products that aren’t safe for use. A government agency or the product’s manufacturer will alert the public of the recall and will recommend that consumers take specific actions.

Consumers will almost always be instructed to discontinue use of the product. In some cases, they will be asked to dispose of the product, and in other cases, they will be asked to return the product to the manufacturer. In some instances, repairs may be made to a product to make it safe for use. A product recall should include specific instructions on what consumers should do. It is very important for consumers to comply with a product recall to avoid injury or illness.

Products can be recalled for many different reasons. For example, a recall can be done for a products that present a choking risk to children or a brake system in a vehicle that does not work. Sometimes further testing is done on a product, and a safety or health issue is discovered. Typically, a number of people are injured by a product, and it is clear that something is wrong.

Commonly Recalled Products

Every year, thousands of products are recalled. Some categories of products that are commonly recalled include:

  • Drugs and medication
  • Children’s products
  • Food products
  • Motor vehicles
  • Cosmetics

You can check the products in your home against the government’s recall database to see if any of them have been recalled.

In addition, the government takes complaints about unsafe or mislabeled products. Unsafe consumer products can be reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Defective vehicles and car accessories can be reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
