Common Car Accident Injuries

According to the Insurance Information Institute, in 2018, more than 1.8 million people were injured in car accidents. Like the causes of car accidents, car accident injuries can vary widely. Some injuries, however, are more common in car accidents. Several factors come into play in the types of injuries seen. For instance, whether individuals were wearing their seatbelts, the point of impact, and the speed of the vehicles are factors that can all affect the type and degree of injury. Some common car accident injuries include:

Soft Tissue Injuries

Soft tissue injuries consist of damage to the muscles, ligaments, or tendons and are the most common type of car accident injury. Muscle injuries and damage to the spine can be very serious and debilitating. Whiplash is a common soft tissue injury that occurs when there is a strain on the neck muscles caused by the sudden impact of a crash.

Head Injuries

Head injuries caused by a car crash can range from a minor concussion to extensive traumatic brain injury. Driver impact with a window or the steering wheel can cause deep lacerations and bruising in addition to serious damage to the brain. A concussion is an example of a closed head injury caused by the impact of a collision, but more serious closed head injuries can result in permanent brain damage. Head injuries are often called a “silent injury,” and the effects may not be seen until a victim has left the scene. That’s why it’s always important to seek medical attention after a car accident, even if you feel like you were not seriously injured.

Chest Injuries

Chest injuries resulting from a car accident usually involve bruising or contusions, but these injuries can be more serious. A fractured sternum can result from impact with the steering wheel. In addition, damage to internal organs and broken ribs are also common injuries.

Arm and Leg Injuries

Injuries to the extremities can be caused by the same forces that result in head injuries. Sudden direction changes or stops caused by an impact can cause the involuntary motion of the limbs and result in injury. Broken limbs caused by impact with the dashboard or the side of the car are not uncommon and can be serious.
