5 Things to Look for in Your Car Insurance Policy

When selecting car insurance coverage, the choices can be daunting. Here are some important things you should consider having as part of your car insurance policy:

Personal Injury Protection

Personal injury protection, or PIP, is required in Florida and should always be part of your policy. Florida requires a minimum of $10,000 in PIP. PIP covers some of your medical bills and lost wages regardless of who is at fault for the accident. Consider purchasing more than the minimum amount.

Property Damage Liability

Property damage liability, or PDL, is also required in Florida. Drivers must have a minimum of $10,000 in PDL. This coverage is used to pay for damage you may have caused to another driver’s vehicle if you are at-fault for an accident.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Uninsured/Underinsured motorist coverage, or UM, is optional in Florida, but you should seriously consider adding it to your policy. UM covers your injuries and property damage if the at-fault driver in an accident has little or no liability insurance. It also covers you if you are involved in a hit and run accident.

Collision Coverage

Collision coverage pays for repairs to your vehicle regardless of who is at fault in the accident. Florida does not require coverage, but you should consider purchasing it because if you cause an accident and your car is totaled, you may be out of luck.

Bodily Injury Liability Coverage

Bodily injury liability coverage is also not mandatory in Florida but is something you should seriously consider purchasing. This coverage pays for the other party’s medical bills and lost income over $10,000 if you are at fault in an accident. Coverage is commonly $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident. Bodily injury liability coverage can be important because it helps you protect your other assets if you cause an accident.
