What Not to do After a Slip and Fall Accident

What Not to Do After a Slip and Fall Accident

Whether you’re in the grocery store, a department store, or a commercial business, you expect property owners and businesses to keep their premises safe. When they fail to do so, it’s easy to become injured in a slip and fall accident. Being injured in a slip and fall accident is stressful, but in order to preserve your claim, it is important that you avoid doing some things.

Stay Silent

If you’ve been involved in a slip and fall accident on a property owner’s premises or a business, it is important that you report your injury to the appropriate person. The store manager or business owner will likely prepare an incident report. Make sure you get a copy of that report.

Say “I’m Sorry”

It’s human nature to instinctively apologize for something even if it wasn’t your fault. However, in the context of a slip and fall accident, your reflexive “sorry” could be used against you later.

Ignore Witnesses

If there were witnesses to your slip and fall, it’s important that you speak with them about what they saw. Get their contact information so you or your attorney can get in touch with them later.

Leave Without Collecting Evidence

Unless you are taken away by ambulance, it is important not to leave the scene of your slip and fall without collecting evidence. Take pictures of the scene and the dangerous condition that caused your fall. Take pictures close up and from further away. These pictures can be very helpful in establishing your claim.

Ignore Your Pain

You may feel that you aren’t in enough pain to see a doctor, but if you have been involved in a slip and fall accident, it is very important that you get examined by a medical professional. If you don’t want to go to the emergency room, at least make an appointment to see your primary care physician.
