According to an analysis published in June by JAMA Pediatrics, pod-based e-cigarettes may be more addictive than other types of e-cigarettes. Juul pods and other similar devices, deliver 60% more nicotine than regular cigarettes. These pod-based devices are designed to deliver nicotine in a low-pH form, which is less harsh compared to other e-cigarette devices. This encourages deeper inhalation and a greater amount of nicotine being consumed.
Addictive to Young People
Due to their high level of nicotine delivery, these pod-based vaping devices are more likely to be addictive. This is especially true for teens and young people who are less likely to consider health implications when consuming vaping devices. Juul and other similar pod-based devices have been popular among teens since they came on the market in 2015.
Recent research has shown that the use of pod-based vaping devices has increased among young people over the years, and this is a dangerous trend given the effects of these devices. For the analysis, researchers looked at 35 English language peer-reviewed studies about pod-based devices. The studies looked at product design, marketing campaigns, biological effects, and population use and perception. They found that although the products may contain lower levels of other harmful ingredients than cigarettes, the level of nicotine exposure in adolescents was considerably higher.
In addition, the analysis noted that the marketing campaigns of pod-based vaping devices, especially Juul, were targeted at adolescents. The devices were marketed as being part of a hip lifestyle and not as a smoking cessation device. The analysis also found that adolescents were more likely to use these devices on a daily basis and to demonstrate symptoms of nicotine dependence.
Better Education
Researchers noted the importance of educating the public about the highly addictive nature of pod-based vaping devices. Companies such as Juul are marketing these devices as safe for consumers, but in fact, they are very harmful, especially for adolescents. It is time for the vaping epidemic among young people to be addressed, and unfortunately, as manufacturers aren’t taking steps to do so, it has become the job of parents and schools.
