Did Zantac, Sunscreen, Give you Cancer?

Were you taking Zantac for months if not years to deal with your heartburn. Is Zantac causing cancer? Well that’s not exactly the pathology at issue. However, news broke in 2019 that Valisure, a pharmacy that was investigating products for cancer, filed a petition with the FDA to recall all ranitidine products. Valisure concluded that ranitidine is an unstable molecule which contains chemicals that combine to form N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). NDMA is a probable carcinogen that has been linked to various cancers, including colon, bladder, and prostate cancer. Other drugs such as valsartan and metformin also contain NDMA. The Zantac litigation is underway and is being handled as consolidated litigation in the Middle District of Florida.
Well if heartburn medication can cause cancer, why can’t sunscreens. Sure enough, news broke in 2021 that several sunscreens and other products contain benzene, a chemical that can also cause cancer. Johnson & Johnson issued a voluntary recall of some sunscreens that contain benzene.
